The Program

Beethoven: String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 130

Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat minor, Op. 138

Beethoven: Grosse Fuge in B-flat major, Op. 133

Beethoven’s B-flat-major quartet shattered tradition with six movements, including the profoundly beautiful Cavatina. The original ending, the Grosse Fuge, was deemed too momentous for an already overpowering work and now stands alone in the repertoire. The “indispensable” Emerson String Quartet (Newsday) performs both pieces along with Shostakovich’s Thirteenth Quartet, a surreal piece in which simplicity becomes sonically extraordinary.

“An extraordinary fusion of experience and authority with audacity and freshness.” Boston Globe
“This new group—Mr. Watkins alongside the violinists Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, and the violist Lawrence Dutton—complemented their customary power, finesse and unanimity with a fresh, palpable vigor at Tully, and it was electrifying.” New York Times
